Your Dog’s Tail Wag Isn’t What You Think

Not all tail wags mean the same thing.
Behaviorists have found that dogs tend to wag a little more to the right when they’re feeling relaxed, happy, and open.
A wag that leans a bit to the left often shows caution: the dog is watching, thinking, trying to decide if everything’s okay.

We see this every week at the shelter.
New rescues arrive wagging low and slightly left, unsure of what comes next.
But then something changes: a volunteer kneels, speaks softly, offers a gentle hand… and over time, the wag lifts, loosens, and shifts to the right.
That moment — the first hopeful, right-sided wag — feels like sunshine cracking through a window.
If your dog greets you with that loose, sweeping wag at home, it’s their way of saying, “I’m happy. I know I’m safe.”
