4 Loving Mistakes That Could Be Hurting Your Dog

We love our dogs so much—but sometimes, the way we react can actually create bad habits without realizing it. Here are four examples:

1.Comforting them too much when they bark

If your pup barks out of fear and you instantly scoop them up, they learn that being loud gets them extra attention. Over time, they may bark or whine just to get their way.

2.  Giving in to picky eating

When your dog turns down kibble and you swap it for chicken or treats, you’re teaching them that fussing gets rewarded. It can throw off their nutrition and turn mealtime into a standoff.

3.  Punishing them when they come

If you call your dog only to give them a bath, medicine, or a scolding, they start to link “come here” with something bad. Next time, don’t be surprised if they hesitate—or bolt the other way.

4.  Letting them pull on walks

Every time you let your dog drag you down the street, you’re reinforcing the idea that pulling works. Pretty soon, you’re not walking them—they’re walking you.
