Why Does My Dog Nap All Over the Place (Like He’s Checking Into Different Hotels)

Ever feel like your dog’s running a bed-and-breakfast tour? One hour on the couch, next under your desk, then by the door.

There’s actually a reason.
Dogs are polyphasic sleepers, meaning they sleep in many short bursts throughout the day.
Humans, on the other hand, are mostly monophasic: we do one long sleep cycle at night to fully recharge (although some of us are biphasic if you take an afternoon nap).

For dogs, rest works differently. Their brains reset in small doses, scattered across familiar spots that make them feel safe.

At our partner shelter, rescues do the same thing. They’ll nap beside another dog one day, alone beside a door the next, testing out peace in small, cautious steps.

So when your pup changes nap spots again, don’t call him restless. He’s just charting where comfort lives.
